Below are some goals for this effort to collect a list of elected positions:
- Human AND machine readable
- Anyone can suggest edits (or file issues)
- Relatively "flat" - Data can be represented as a single table
Below are some features intentionally NOT in the initial scope:
- Geospatial data - Geospatial data like shape files can be kept separately and joined by jurisdiction (and possibly district)
- Non-public contact info -
contactId
could be used as a reference into another system that might store non-public contact info
Below are some possible use cases / scenarios:
- Identify positions up for election in a given year
- Identify elected incumbents to support or challenge (including party affiliation and/or past support)
- Identify positions an individual could run for
- Identify races for positions when an organization could endorse
Below are some style conventions:
- All fields are treated as text strings, but this spec may define recommended values with specific meaning (ex: "Statewide")
- Years should use four digits
- Proper nouns should be capitalized
- Numbers that range into double digits should be zero-padded (ex: 05th Legislative District)
(Optional) Year when the position was most recently previously elected
(Required) Year when the position will be next up for election
(Optional) The number of years the position is elected for
(Required) The county that manages this election (or "Statewide")
(Required) The jurisdiction for the elected office
(Required) The title for the elected official (ex: Governor, Councilmember, etc.)
(Optional) If the jurisdiction is split into multiple geographic districts.
A common example of this is the Washington State Senate being split into 49 geographic districts.

"posCounty": "Statewide",
"posJurisdiction": "Washington State",
"posTitle": "Senator",
"posDistrict": "05th Legislative District",
"posSlot": "",
...
}
(Optional) If there are multiple positions elected from the same jurisdiction (and district) A common example of this is the Washington State House having two slots per legislative district.
{
"posTermNext": "2018",
"posCounty": "Statewide",
"posJurisdiction": "Washington State",
"posTitle": "Representative",
"posDistrict": "05th Legislative District",

...
}
