Switch tabs in most recently used order

When there are more than 2 tabs open I prefer to switch tabs in the most recently used order. This allows me to quickly toggle between 2 tabs. I.e. I would like an option to switch tabs with the same behavior as switching between windows. (alt+tab, or cmd+tab)

Example - current behavior

• tab1, tab2, tab3, and tab4 are open
• I select tab2, then tab4
• (from tab4) when I trigger the next_tab action, tab1 is selected
• (from tab1) when I trigger next_tab again, tab2 is selected.

Example - desired behavior

• tab1, tab2, tab3, and tab4 are open
• I select tab2, then tab4
• (from tab4) when I trigger the next_tab action, tab2 is selected
• (from tab2) when I trigger next_tab again, tab4 is selected.

Sugested solution

The next_tab and previous_tab commands could function as they do today and new actions (e.g. previous_tab_mru and next_tab_mru) could be added that allow keybindings to trigger this functionality.

EDIT: In the examples I originally used privious_tab, but I think it would actually be next_tab

What would previous_tab_mru do?

Lets say that my current stack is tab2, tab4, tab1, tab3 (meaning I'm looking at tab2, and tab4 was the tab I was looking at previously, and tab1 was the tab I was looking at before that, etc.).

Lets also say that I have assigned the shortcuts next_tab_mru=ctrl+tab and previous_tab_mru=ctrl+shift+tab

If I hold ctrl and press tab, I will move from tab2 to tab4. If I continue to hold ctrl and press tab again, I will move to tab1.

Using the original order again, if I hold ctrl+shift and press tab, I will move to tab3. If I continue to hold ctrl+shift and press tab again, I will move to tab1.

Ideally, if I am holding ctrl and move a couple of tabs over, and then decide I want to go back the other way, I would add shift while still holding ctrl and move back. e.g. using the original order again, if I hold ctrl and press tab, tab4 is selected, if I press tab again, tab1 is selected, if I add shift (so I'm no holding ctrl+shift) and press tab, tab4 is selected, and if I press tab again, tab2 is selected.

As far as I can tell, this is only possible if a popup appears¹ when ctrl+tab has been held, right (c.f. Firefox (fork) screenshot below)? Otherwise pressing ctrl+tab would modify the stack before you're able to ctrl+shift+tab.

iTerm doesn't have a popup for mru switching. However, I agree, it is easier to follow if there is a popup of some sort.
