Currently, the poster picture is taken at the first frame of the video. I tried using avconv's -ss parameter to put it a few seconds in, but avconv would fail to produce a picture when the video is shorter than the offset specified with -ss.
The solution to this problem might involve parsing the output of avprobe (which apparently can be formatted in various formats) and get the length from there.
We might need to know the length of the video to communicate it to clients anyway. For instance, the web video player in its current configuration does not show the length of the video.
