Bug: collections of arrays on states

State properties which are collections of arrays break serialization with unhelpful error messages.

To replicate:

1. Create a state with a property that is a collection
2. Fill the collection with associative arrays
3. Do anything that will snapshot the state
4. Rehydrate the state from the snapshot.
5. See a completely deranged snapshot, and get an error message that is not clear.
