Way to not show black bars on left and right side of window when using boxvideo

I am looking to be able to hide the black bars that show up on left and right side of window when playing videos using the following two settings
osc-visibility=always
osc-boxvideo=yes

I found the following issue posted about this topic found here
Box video without black bars ? #9983
but it does not appear to be being worked on

I was wondering if anyone knows of any tricks to prevent this from happening?
