Currently, a tester is able to choose from some preset "Undesirable behaviors" checkboxes, e.g. "Output is excessively verbose". However, there is no facility for them to provide an explanation of why they chose the options that they did. A freeform text input is only available once the "Other" checkbox has been checked.
Impact
When a tester chooses one or more of the preset undesirable behaviours, the Test Admin must either infer their reasoning (e.g. from the provided screen reader output) or ask the tester about it. Both of these reduce productivity and increase the likelihood of misunderstandings/errors.
When the presence of undesirable behaviour(s) is published in a report, an assistive technology developer has no insight into why this was the case. Particularly if the assertions passed in conjunction with additional undesirable outcomes.
Suggested Solution
As discussed on the Community Group meeting of May 26, 2022:
Rename the "If "other" selected, explain" field, by changing its label:
Given the length of the current label text, and the amount of space it takes up, a descriptive alternative would be: "Explanation of undesirable behaviors".
Other permutations are possible, e.g. "Explanation", "Explain the undesirable behaviors you experienced", etc., but I suggest that it should be as descriptive as the space can accommodate.
It may also help to add an additional instruction, e.g.: "Please explain the undesirable behaviors you experienced while running the test. For example, if you feel that the screen reader output was excessively verbose, tell us which aspect(s) of the output caused that concern and why.".
Allow the input field to be edited as long as at least one of the "Undesirable behaviors" checkboxes is checked (including "Other").
