Cropping portrait images is not a great idea when humans are on the photo. It usually cuts the heads off.

It works as designed as covers have a required aspect ratio on both mobile and web. Mistakes bound to happen, but unfortunately, cropping happens too often as Reader displays random images from the post as covers #24045. There are some clear issues with the current system.
