This commit updates the README. The Support section is removed as the forum has been taken down years ago and the links to the mailing lists on R-forge are not very useful anymore either. The link to www.genable.org is also removed as that website no longer exists.
This commit updates the .gitignore file. It cleans it up a bit, but most importantly, it adds the files generated by `make check` to the list of ignored files to make sure those don't get accidentally added (or just clutter the output of `git status`).
